HERBIE Beagle Adult Male in Richmond, Virginia

My story

Herbie is a beautiful, small, red and white adult male Beagle. He's three years old, 23 pounds and came to Critter Cavalry with his brother who has already been adopted. Herbie and brother were kept in a small, filthy backyard dog pen and only experienced the rarest human interaction when their food was dropped over the fencing and occasionally having fresh water put in their pen.  A Critter Cavalry foster parent visited the home for unrelated reasons and talked the dogs' owners into surrendering the unwanted Beagle brothers. Herbie's brother Hank quickly adapted to his foster home and got over his shyness quickly and then was adopted. On the other hand, Herbie is a naturally fearful dog who has been in Critter Cavalry's care for a year, slowly adjusting to regular contact with people. He is a naturally cautious dog who will require the patience of an experienced dog owner who appreciates the joy of earning the trust and love of an animal. Herbie will never be gregarious and a go-with the flow personality, but he is a loyal, well-behaved, a beautiful young dog with a calm and endearing disposition who bonds quickly to other dogs.

When Herbie first arrived, he quickly became the shadow of the most giant dog he could find in the house or at the dog park. He is highly submissive and often a wallflower at the dog park, even though it's his favorite place to be. Herbie feels safest with other dogs, so it is a requirement that he goes to a home with another dog - of any size and age. In his current foster home, Herbie doesn't even require a leash as he obediently follows his foster family from the front door to the car for daily dog park visits. But early in his stay with Critter Cavalry, he panicked during a handoff and gave us quite the scare before we finally trapped him after 24 hours on the run. For this reason, Herbie is best suited for a house with a secure fenced-in backyard. Herbie panics when in an enclosed area like a dog crate or small bathroom alone. Likely left-over trauma from years in that dog pen. So, he should be in a home where the dogs are not isolated in a small space when his humans will be away from the house. If you have a quiet home with another dog who would love a shadow in the form of this beautiful and soulful Beagle, then Herbie is the dog for you.  You will receive great satisfaction at seeing just how  much Herbie can come around and learn to trust you and accept your love.   He just needs a patient and kind heart to put in the time.  He is well worth it   Email CCRTennessee@gmail.com or CCRNewEngland@gmail.com or visit /adoption to request an adoption application and learn more about our organization and fees.
