The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is seeking a full-time Poultry Grader/Inspector for Accomac County and surrounding areas to perform technical grading/inspections on poultry/poultry products to determine appropriate USDA grades. Duties include monitoring commercial and government specifications to ensure plant compliance with formulation and processing standards as specified by various processing contracts; ensuring maintenance of sanitation standards; trains and monitors the work of authorized plant graders; and signing off on all documentation that pertains to grading and inspection functions.

Qualifications: Working knowledge of the poultry industry, poultry processing techniques, grading standards as specified by the USDA, and specifications governing the export of products. Effective customer service, oral and written communication, organizational, and computer skills. Ability to communicate effectively with plant management and agency supervisory personnel; to work with limited supervision; and to train and monitor plant personnel. Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply regulations. Prior work experience or background in poultry production, processing, or grading and in working with limited supervision. Must have or be able to obtain USDA Poultry Grading License for grading poultry/poultry products as issued by the USDA after completing a minimum of 120 hours of supervised training. Must be available to temporarily work in different plants in emergency situations and meet the physical demands of the position. Valid Virginia driver's license. Prefer: Coursework in poultry science or related field; knowledge of USDA Poultry Grading Standards and Regulations; and work experience directly related to the USDA Poultry Grading Regulations and Standards. An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience. Hiring Salary Range: $24,479 - $27,500 annually.
